4D Sukau Wildlife Safari
Sukau, Sabah, East Malaysia, Borneo

The island of Borneo boasts some of the world’s most bizarre and beautiful wildlife: from gliding mammals and reptiles, fishing cats and bearded pigs, to the almost-human orang-utan. This tour takes you to the famous Sepilok Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Centre, before heading into the rainforest up the Kinabatangan River, which begins in the mountainous centre of Sabah and snakes down through the forest to Sandakan Bay, leaving oxbow lakes in its wake as it changes course over the years. The lower reaches of this river hold amazingly rich bird life, as well as orang-utans, elephants and Borneo’s unique proboscis monkeys.

The Sukau Rainforest Lodge is an award-winning jungle resort built on stilts using traditional architecture. Great pains were taken to minimize its impact on the rainforest environment. River tours from the resort use boats with quiet electric motors for a more intimate wildlife experience.

Day 01 / Arrive Sandakan
On arrival in Sandakan, our representative will meet you and transfer to the Hotel Sandakan. Rest of the day at leisure. Overnight Sandakan.

Day 02 / Sandakan - Sukau
You will be picked-up from your hotel after breakfast and transferred to visit the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, for a close-up look at Borneo’s Red Apes, the Orang Utans. The Centre takes in animals illegally kept as pets, or displaced by logging or oil palm plantations, and releases them into the Kabili Forest Reserve, training those who need it the necessary survival skills to return to the wild. Lunch in Sandakan. Transfer to Sandakan jetty for a 2-hrs boat ride across the bay and up the Kinabatagan River. This, the largest and longest river in Sabah, winds its way deep into the rainforest, to the Lower Kinabatagan wildlife sanctuary. Arrive at Sukau Rainforest Lodge, designed to have a minimum impact on the environment, where we will stay for 2 nights. In the afternoon, take a ride on quiet electric boats to view the wildlife of this area, which includes the rare probocis monkeys, snakes, birds and, if you are fortunate, Orang Utan and the Borneo pygmy elephant. Return to the lodge for dinner, a solar-heated shower, and a slide show presented by a naturalist guide.

Day 03 / Sukau
Wake up early for a river safari at dawn. Weather permitting; take a short trek through the jungle to the Kelenap Ox-bow Lake, once part of the river. Return to the lodge for a late breakfast. You may make a visit later to Sukau Village, or just relax and enjoy nature at the lodge. In the afternoon, take another river safari. There is an optional night safari after dinner, to try to spot nocturnal wildlife.

Day 04 / Sukau - Departure Sandakan
After breakfast, we check-out of the lodge and head downriver back to Sandakan town. After lunch, proceed on a tour of Sandakan, including the Agnes Keith Museum, Australian War Memorial and water village. Then transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
