New 7 Wonders of the World
Whereas the ancient 7 Wonders of the World were concentrated in the Mediterranean, the new 7 Wonders of the World contest has drawn nominations from around the world. The campaign to name the new wonders was launched by Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber in 1999.
From 200 original nominations, 77 were hand-picked by a jury of renowned architects and ex-UNESCO chief Federico Mayor before 21 were short-listed at the end of 2006 by the New7Wonders Foundation. For inclusion in the list, the new wonders had to be man-made, completed by 2000 and in an ‘acceptable’ state of preservation.
The 21 short-listed sites included the Acropolis in Athens, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the statues on Easter Island, Britain’s Stonehenge, Cambodia’s Angkor Wat temples, the Statue of Liberty in New York and the Alhambra in Spain.
Notably UNESCO, the UN cultural body that designates world heritage sites, skipped the 070707 event.
The new 7 Wonders of the World according to New7Wonders Foundation are (drum roll please…)
- The Great Wall of China , China
- Petra, Jordan
- Chichén Itzá, Mexico
- The Statue of Christ Redeemer, Brazil
- The Colosseum, Rome
- Machu Picchu, Peru
- Taj Mahal, India
