11D A Week Below Everest,
Kingdom of Nepal
This scenic trek through the river valley of the Dudh Kosi, brings you to the traditional Sherpa villages of Namche, Khumjung and Khunde and the monastery at Thyangboche. You will meet the Sherpas, enjoy their world renowned hospitality and witness how life continues very much as it has done for centuries. We will visit the famous Thyangboche Monastery, set high on its ridge, commanding some of the best views in the area.
Indeed, throughout this trek, you will have magnificent views of Mt Everest (8,850m), Lhotse (8,501m), Nuptse (7,879m), Ama Dablam (6,856m), Thamserku (6,608m) and Kantega (6,685m) and the great glaciers, snowfields and ice ridges, glisten in the Himalayan sun. There are also the dark forests, open pastures and masses of rhododendron flowers in the pre-monsoon, or the reds and gold of autumn in the post-monsoon.
Look out for the huge lammergeiers, with a 2 to 3m wingspan, circling on the updraughts, the proud thar, the Himalayan mountain goat silhouetted on a high ridgeline, or the strange musk deer, shyly scurrying through the undergrowth. See also the intricately carved mani stones, prayer flags fluttering in the breeze and the all-seeing eyes of Buddha on every chorten and stupa. This is an area rich in cultural, religious and environmental interests, set in the awe-inspiring landscape below the highest mountain on Earth.

From Phakding, we cross and re-cross the rivers on high suspension bridges. Beyond Monjo is the entrance to the Sagarmatha National Park. The park was set-up to conserve this fragile mountain environment. We then ascend steeply to Namche and along the way, if the weather permits, catch the first glimpse of Mt Everest. Our final day’s trekking follows the Dudh Koshi back down to Lukla. This last evening in the mountains presents an ideal opportunity for a farewell party with the Sherpa guides and porters. We get to sample chang (local beer), try some Sherpa dance steps and end the trek on a merry note.
