Mount Kinabalu at 4,095m, is the highest mountain in Southeast Asia. It was formed one and a half million years ago - an infant compared to other mountains. Kinabalu is home to over 400 different types of fern and 1500 different orchids. There are more species of pitcher plants on Kinabalu than any where else in the world.

The first recorded ascent of Kinabalu was made by Hugh Low, then a colonial official in Borneo, in 1851. The highest peak is named after him, although it was not discovered by him (it was John Whitehead who discovered Low’s Peak in 1888). Low and his party took 15 days just to reach the base of Kinabalu. Nowadays it can be climbed in 2 days.

Sarawak’s massive limestone outcroppings are honeycombed with caves, carved over millions of years by the run off from tropical downpours. The world’s most extensive cave system so far discovered is in the Mulu National Park. So far, 310 kilometres of passages have been surveyed and this is thought to be only one third of the passages that exist. Exploration is continuing.

The well-lit and plank-walked Wind and Clearwater Caves are popular with visitors but no serious deep exploration has been done of other limestone formations.

The Maliau Basin is one of the most spectacular and pristine natural features in Malaysia, and indeed, Southeast Asia. The Maliau Basin is almost unvisited and completely uninhabited by man. It is located in south-central Sabah, about 40km north of the Indonesian border at between 116° 40′ - 117° 2′ and 4° 40′ 4° 50′ N.

While all of this region is rugged, remote and forested, the Maliau Basin is distinguished by its steep slopes up to 1,500m in height, making it insurmountable on foot from most directions. The size of the enclosed Basin is 390 sq. km with a maximum diameter of 25km. The highest point Mt. Lotung, on the north rim stands at 1900m. It is drained by a set of radiating tributaries of the Maliau River, one of which descends a series of waterfalls, known as the Maliau Falls.

Tabin was declared a wildlife reserve because of the large numbers of wildlife and birds inhabiting its jungle, many of which are endemic and endangered species. The three largest land mammals of Sabah: Asian Elephant, Sumatran Rhino and the “tembadau” or wild buffalo are found within the forests of Tabin. It is no wonder that Tabin is heralded as one of the finest wildlife viewing area in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.

Borneo Rainforest Lodge, located in a magnificent jungle setting beside the Danum River, is in the heart of the Danum Valley Conservation Area. One of the last undisturbed forests of Borneo, and one of the last real opportunities to learn about the richness of the rainforest.
