Bario in the Kelabit Highlands of Sarawak is a favourite optional trip for those keen on jungle trekking; with no roads in or out of Bario, you have to go as everyone else does – on foot! The cooler climate and hilly landscape combined with the friendliness of the people make this a memorable trip.
High up in the mountains, beyond Mulu and close to the border with Indonesian Kalimantan lie the Kelabit Highlands, named after the predominant tribe in the area.
There are no roads in and out of Bario and many of the other villages, only jungle trails. Distances are measured in hours or days on foot; all luxuries like petrol ($15 a gallon!) or Coca-Cola have to be flown in by air. This is a rural air service operated at present by the Twin Otter aircraft of Malaysian Airlines, and a new charter service just started using a similar Dornier light aircraft.
Facilities are quite primitive by “modern” standards and the food is mostly rice and home grown vegetables. Wild boar is hunted and eaten most days when in season. There are superb walks in and around Bario (you will meet almost everyone if you stay a few days!) and good jungle trekking to nearby Kelabit villages and Penan settlements. The climate is so cooler (around 22 to 25°C in the daytime and quite chilly at night).

Itinerary
Day 01 / Arrive Miri
Arrive in Miri, meet/greet and transfer to the hotel. The rest of the day is free at own leisure.
Overnight at Mega Hotel.
Day 02 / Miri – Bario – Baro Asal (B/L/D)
Transfer to airport for flight to Bario. Land at Bario rural airport in the late morning and check in at a local lodge. After lunch, stroll through the valley towards Bario Asal, the oldest longhouse in the valley. Meet and interact with the local Kelabits before returning to the lodge for evening meal and rest.
Day 03 / Baro Asal – Pa’Longgan (B/L/D)
In the morning trek to Pa Longgan, passing by the village of Pa’Ukat. Lots of pitcher plants & orchids border the way. Fill yourself with Kelabit legends as you pass ancient Kelabit megaliths. Have lunch at the village. After lunch, explore around the village and discover an ancient Kelabit Dolmen. Dinner and overnight at a lodge in Batu Ritong.
Day 04 / Pa’Longgan – Pa’Umor (B/L/D)
After breakfast, walk along the Pa Longgan River to the Pa Dabpur River. Board a longboat and start your journey down river to Pa’Umor (depending on the water level). Check in at Gem’s Lodge. After dinner, a night tour behind Gem’s lodge in search of nocturnal wild life
Day 05 / Pa’Umor – Miri (B/-/-)
Walk to the airport and catch your flight to Miri, and onward flight.
