India’s largest annual festival is a colourful spectacle. Hundreds of thousands of devotees haul gigantic chariots through the main street of Puri. The air is filled with the rhythmic clang of metal gongs, blowing of conch shells and trumpets, and chanting of holy men. Day 01 / Arrive Kolkata
Arrive in Kolkata at any time.
Day 02 / Kolkata
The best way to experience Kolkata is to surrender yourself to the chaos and just go with it. Wake at dawn and go for an early morning wander through the famous flower markets to discover the British influence on the “City of Joy”.
Days 03-04 / Puri / Chilika Lake
Wander the old streets of Puri with its thousands of pilgrims. Discover the ancient secrets of the nearby Sun Temple at Konark and unwind on the tranquil waters of Chilika Lake, the largest brackish water lake in Asia.
Day 05 / Chariot Festival
The chariot festival, or Rath Yatra, at Puri is one of India’s most colourful events. Tens of thousands of local Hindus pull three massive chariots through the streets of Puri. The chariots feature images of Lord Jagannath- the Lord of the Universe- and his brother and sister and are pulled to a temple 3 km away. The devotional act is performed annually in honour of the journey of Lord Jagannath as he traveled from his temple in Puri to the countryside.
Days 06-07 / Puri
Enjoy Puri’s wonderfully wide white-sand beaches or head to one of the nearby villages that specilaize in the traditional handicrafts of Orissa.
