Tabin was declared a wildlife reserve because of the large numbers of wildlife and birds inhabiting its jungle, many of which are endemic and endangered species. The three largest land mammals of Sabah: Asian Elephant, Sumatran Rhino and the “tembadau” or wild buffalo are found within the forests of Tabin. It is no wonder that Tabin is heralded as one of the finest wildlife viewing area in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.
Borneo Rainforest Lodge, located in a magnificent jungle setting beside the Danum River, is in the heart of the Danum Valley Conservation Area. One of the last undisturbed forests of Borneo, and one of the last real opportunities to learn about the richness of the rainforest.
Day 01 / Kota Kinabalu - Lahad Datu - Tabin Wildlife Reserve (B/L/D)
Transfer to airport for flight to Lahad Datu. On arrival transfer from Lahad Datu on gravel road to Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Briefing and check in upon arrival. Visit Lipad Mud Volcano in the afternoon. Explore the area known to be frequently visited by deer, wild boars, elephants and birds. Look out for and identify the amazing footprints of animals. Those adventurous can experiment the effect of the volcanic mud said to be responsible for fine complexion. Dinner followed by a night animal spotting trip to observe nocturnal wildlife and birds.
Day 02 / Tabin Wildlife Reserve (B/L/D)
Today, we trek through the lush green jungle known for its rich diversity of plants and animal species to visit Lipad’s Waterfall. Take a dip in the natural pool. Alternatively explore the surrounding vegetation or just relax. Return to base in the afternoon. Rest. At dusk, go for bird watching within the reserve. After dinner, night activities to look out for nocturnal wildlife and birds.
Day 03 / Tabin Wildlife Reserve - Borneo Rainforest Lodge (B/L/D)
After breakfast, walk to the nearby rock pool. Choose to take a dip in the water or simply immerse yourself in nature. After lunch, depart Tabin Wildlife Reserve to Lahad Datu.
From here, drive for about two hours through selectively logged forest, cocoa and soft-wood plantations before arriving the Borneo Rainforest Lodge located beside the Danum River on the edge of 438 sq km of undisturbed lowland rainforest. Danum Valley is home to the full range of Sabah’s lowland fauna, including the rare Sumatran Rhinoceros, Elephants, Clouded Leopards, Orang Utans and over 290 species of birds. Explore nature trails and the nearby river with our naturalist. In the evening a slide show is presented and if weather permits go on the night to spotlight nocturnal animals. Overnight at Borneo Rainforest Lodge.
Day 04 / Borneo Rainforest Lodge (B/L/D)
Before breakfast go for an early morning walk to the Canopy Walkway. After breakfast, trek up to the View Point for a bird eye’s view of the Danum Valley forest and to reach the escarpment of an ancient “Kadazandusun” burial site. On the way down stop by the waterfall and take a dip in a refreshing rock pool. Lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon go trekking along jungle trails by the riverside. After dinner, weather permitting go for a guided night walk.
Day 05 / Borneo Rainforest Lodge - Kota Kinabalu (B/L/-)
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast watching the lifting of the morning mist across the river from your breakfast table. After breakfast, go walking on self-guided trail by the main lodge. Return to then main lodge for lunch before departing for Lahad Datu at 1:30 p.m. Take the last flight back to Kota Kinabalu.
